Email: abdmap@natgeo.su.se
Description: A European wide concerted action, funded under Environment and Climate
Programme of the European Commission´s framework programme IV. Background: Recent
observations suggest an increasing frequency of algal blooms in coastal waters, many of
them even toxic. The effects are noticed on the environment, marine life and health. An
earlier study programme called OCTOPUS, undertaken for the European Commission,
investigated operational uses of ocean colour data and recognised the potential use of
satellite based data to monitor algal blooms. ABDMAP, a Concerted Action, was conceived
partly in response to this study, to bring together workers interested in the role of
remote sensing (EO) data in the detection, monitoring and prediction of coastal and marine
algal blooms in European waters. Topics in the Stockholm will be: Identification,
Characterisation, Detection

The ambition with our session is to fuse environmental and socio-economic sciences with
statistics., where the object is coastal zone studies in general. Presently
multidisciplinary studies within this theme are carried out on both local, regional and
global scales. This due to the increased pressure on this region, e.g. due to
urbanisation, industralisation and intense aqua- and agriculture. Theoretical science
meets applied sciences in an attempt to understand the coastal zone dynamics and to
support descision-makers in the attempt to manage human activities within this region.

1109 - The
Changing Coastal Oceans: From Assessment to Prediction, 23-28 November 1998, Rostock,
Germany
The ecosystem of many coastal oceans, among them
the Baltic Sea, have been intensively investigated and monitored. Yet there is still a
considerable lack of knowledge concerning crucial processes. The conference will address
mass and energy fluxes affected by physical-biological processes, the role of trophic
level interactions, changes in species composition as well as the spatial and temporal
scales of significant changes. The conference will concentrate on the following themes:
Focus 1: Present day ecosystem behaviour, Focus 2: Response to forcing; Focus 3:
Prediction of future changes; Focus 4: Gian in knowledge from large international research
projects.
Organized by: Baltic Sea Research Institute Warnemuende (IOW), with co-sponsorship from
BMB and CBO.

the oceans to sustainable development in Latin America, November 1998, Santiago, Chile.
This regional seminar aims at facilitating a forum for the exchange of experiences and
priorities vis-a- vis the role of oceans and seas in the strategies for sustainable
development in countries of the region. The seminar is convened in the context of the
International Year of the Ocean and also in view of the consideration of the subject of
oceans by the Commission on Sustainable Development during 1999. The main preliminary
agenda items refer to: 1) the role of the oceans in the regional efforts of the United
Nations System towards sustainable development; 2) The marine scientifc research in Latin
America; 3) The emerging issues for ocean affairs in the region: i) integrated management
of coastal and marine areas; i) the economy of the oceans in a world of globalization
(fisheries; tourism; mining; biotechnology)4) Elaboration of a regional contribution to
the work of the Commission on Sustainable Development.
Organizer: Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
