
International Maritime Organization
The following IMO activities will be associated with the International Year of the
Ocean:
1. Workshop on Waste Management and Marine Pollution Prevention in Southern and Eastern
Africa in Cape Town in April 1998;
2. Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) Conference in Australia in 1998. The Conference
will mark the completion of the global SAR Plan which would greatly enhance safety at
sea;.
3. Regional Workshop on the Protection of Marine Environment from Shipping
Operations in Australia in 1998 (A joint activity with the Government of Australia);
4. Some other activities are also under preparation in IMO to observe the
Year. For example, the Secretary-General plans, in connection with the 50th
anniversary of the IMO contention, to organize an exhibition at IMO Headquarters in March
1998 to underline the role of IMO in respect of the use and protection of the oceans;
5. In addition, the IMO will co-operate with other UN agencies to organize a
number of joint activities as contributions of the UN system to the Year, such as:
1. International symposium on Marine Pollution in Monaco in
1998 with IAEA as lead agency; and
2. UN Ocean Atlas with FAO as lead agency.
