Contest for Journalists

Introduction

In the International Year of the Ocean, UNESCO is organizing a contest for journalists throughout the country, in cooperation with the National Commission for UNESCO, the Argentinian Army and Swissair and the support of La Maison de France. The overall theme of the works to be considered is: "The Ocean: source of life and civilization". Works have to be presented before 31 July 1998 to UNESCO's Representative in Argentina (postal seal should not exceed this date); address found below. 
Organization of the Contest
 
  • The contest is open to journalists in activity throughout the country.  Journalists should be accredited by their corresponding media; for graphic reporters ARGRA credentials will be enough.
  • Three categories will be considered: written, audiovisual press, and photojournalism
    -written works: should be presented as a research note; minimum 6 pages, maximum 8 pages, letter sized, double spaces, 14 point characters; please include 3 copies of the note
    -audiovisual works: should be edited in Betacam or U-Matic and one VHS copy; time limit of 3 minutes including presentation
    -photographic works: should consist of either one photograph with title and epigraph or a photographic serial (a sequence of four shots maximum, numbered in order, indicating the site where the pictures were taken), either in color or black and white; the photographs must be 24x30 and 30x40 or equivalent dimensions; copies should be delivered unframed and unassembled, and should be registered as photodocumentals or photographic reports. Assembled or digital images will not be accepted.
  • The organizers are not responsible for loss or damage of material.
  • Works must have one author only; all works must be unpublished; works must be presented in sealed envelopes including a pseudonym and title of the work;a separate envelope should be included with the author's name, pseudonym, and resume
  • Prizes: One first prize will be given for each category consisting of a round-trip ticket to Paris by Swissair, business class, 5 nights lodging in October (dates will be determined according to activities organized by UNESCO-Paris), and US $1000 for personal expenses; winners will be received by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and by other UNESCO authorities; winners will visit the Museum of the Ocean in Monaco (visit and lodging provided by La Maison de France). Honorable mention will be given to the second and third place winners for each category.
  • Awarded works will be reproduced by written, audiovisual and electronic media and will not be returned to their authors
  • Works will be evaluated by a jury composed of : Pedro Simoncini, Nelson Castro, Cesar Mascetti, Virginia Santana, Julio Orione, Fernando Sokolowicz, Diego Goldberg, Eduardo Gil, Julio Menajovsky, and Almirante Alfredo Young
  • Possible areas of focus include: the Importance of oceans for life in the planet: their influence in the climate and its regulation, biodiversity, abundance of energetic resources and ecosystems; Ocean Health: present situation and perspectives; Importance of the ocean in human activities: communication, business, transport, industry; Resources protection: effect on the oceans of land-based activities, coastal state activities aimed at sustainable development, cattle vs. fishing, nourishment of the future-krill; Ocean: scenario of environmental diseases and how to minimize them: ocean and greenhouse gases, 'El Nino' its effect as a climate variable, indicators of global change: water level, extension of marine ice in polar casquettes, etc.
