In a few words...

The SMV and the VIMS publicly announced in mid-September 1998 a collaboration to promote marine litteracy in the Commonwealth and the mid-Atlantic region by focusing on the IYO. The collaboration will enhance Environmental Sciences exhibitions and programs and make VIMS research more accessible to the public through:

  • Marine Science Literacy information dissemination in recognition of the IYO through the Museum's satellite science centers and statewide coverage of school systems, and its annual attendance of over 350,000 museum visitors;

  • Hot-button internet web links to SMV and VIMS web sites, and other web sites;

  • A 4-part lecture series on the IYO;

  • A 7-part MiniOceans program that emulates the core marine science courses taken by graduate students at VIMS concluding with a tour of its campus facilities and programs beginning in 1998 to celebrate the IYO;

  • Involvment of marine science professors and specialists at VIMS in the development and review of science content of exhibits being created for the Environmental sciences Exhibitions of the Museum's new Life Science Gallery;

  • Enhanced participation by VIMS researchers and educators in the Museums'a annual Bay Days festival celebrating Chesapeake Bay and the IYO.
