description: EUROTURTLE - A MEDITERRANEAN SEA TURTLE BIOLOGY &
CONSERVATION WEB SITE FOR SCIENCE AND EDUCATION
A new Internet Web Site for Mediterranean Sea Turtles came into
existence. It is called EuroTurtle and is based at the University of Exeter in England and
is a joint venture between the University, the Biology Department of Kings College,
Taunton and MEDASSET (The Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles). It
originated from an experience of just how difficult it was to locate and coordinate
information about Mediterranean turtle conservation. Its organisation into an educational
and research database available on the Internet will appeal to scientists,
conservationists, educators, students of all ages as well as to keen amateurs. EuroTurtle
is now available for viewing at the URL shown below.
The aim of this site are wide ranging but hope to provide information for serious
scientific projects and to educational groups at all levels; to provide a cheap and
effective information site with emphasis on easy and exciting information retrieval; to
keep close links with conservation groups, universities and involved inter-governmental
bodies e.g. UNEP, in order to update and extend the site; to enhance information flow
between conservation groups, individuals, education and other scientific bodies.
The site is believed to be first in Europe fully devoted to the conservation and
biology of sea turtles and its style and content is very different from other sites on the
web. It is based around the three Mediterranean species (Loggerhead, Green and
Leatherback) which are under extreme pressure in this fabulous but enclosed sea.
The site presents valuable information in a variety of different formats although there
is a strong emphasis on education and learning. There are overviews of all sea turtle
species, section on the threats to turtles in the Mediterranean ( e.g. tourism),
identification keys and even an adventure game involving a loggerhead turtle trying to lay
eggs on a popular Greek island frequented by tourists.
The site is packed with high quality graphics, photographs, work sheets, diagrams and
data provided by MEDASSET and a recent Kings College Expeditions to four
Mediterranean nesting sites in July, 1996. The University of Exeter has included the
project in their research on Education via Internet and it is part of a PhD study by the
author and is supervised by Dr.L.M Baggot and Prof. N Davis of Exeter University.
It is also hoped that EuroTurtle can be a home for as many Mediterranean sea turtle
conservation groups as possible, where their opinions and scientific data can be fully
available to all those interested in the survival of the Mediterranean sea turtles (There
are plans to put the KMTP - Kefalonian Marine Turtle Project, on EuroTurtle during 1997).
There has already been considerable interest from Scientists and Conservationists from all
over the world although the site is still in its developmental stage and has not been
widely publicised. They all agree that the site is making a real contribution towards the
survival of sea turtles in the Mediterranean.

In 1997, MEDASSET in collaboration with the Naples Institute for Zoological Research,
"Anton Dohrn", released "Paola" (an incidentally caught turtle who was
rehabilitated and fitted with a satellite transmitter) from the Greek island of Kefalonia.
By tracking her movements we are learning more about the migratory routes of turtles. A
month after her release "Paola" was caught in the nets of a Greek fisherman who
cut her free. Thus "Paola" became an international celebrity.
In 1998 MEDASSET is supporting the Telemetric Monitoring Project of the Glasgow
University Marine Turtle Research Group, on Green Turtles from the north-eastern Cyprus
nesting beaches.

- Mare Liberum : fisherpeople of India (0502)
Photographs by Dominic Morissette and Catherine Pappas
Photo Exhibit At the Cultural Center La Picasse, Petit-de-Grat (Isle Madame)
date: Opening on Thursday, May 7th at 7pm
English
Mare liberum, 1609: Treatise written by the jurist Grotius relating to the conflict
between the Netherlands and England on the case of the herring fisheries around the
British coasts. Kerala, India 1997-98. Along the seacost, following the footprints on the
sand, we come across a theatre of life, an existence punctuated by the tide: open sky
markets, fish merchants, hands scorched by the seasalt and the Southern sun emptying
fishnets. Faces deeply furrowed by the traces of time. Men and women moulded by the sea,
by the Indian Ocean.
A child smiles at us. His eyes stare straight into the camera. The waves give the sea a
jagged outline that reveal a way of life threatened by modern development. Suddenly, the
water erases all signs of our presence.
Mare Liberum - fisherpeople of India: An exhibit of about twenty black and white
photographs describing the daily life of fishing communities in Kerala, a province located
in extreme South-West India. For 30 years, fish haversters and fishworkers from the
Trivandrum sector, in Kerala, have joined hands in order to struggle against the
government¹s economic liberalization measures that have led to overfishing, stock
depletion, social conflict, exploitation of local workers and an increase of fish prices
destined to the local markets.
Small groups and country-wide associations have established solid links with coastal
communities all over the world. Last November, they formed the World Forum of Fish
harvesters and fishworkers and held a first meeting in Delhi. Various Canadian
organizations attended the Forum. This photo exhibit aims at exposing the struggle of fish
harvesters and fishworkers in India.

De la liberté des mers : les pêcheurs de l¹Inde
Photographies de Dominic Morissette et Catherine Pappas
Exposition Au Centre culturel La Picasse, Petit-de-Grat (Isle Madame)
