NEAMWave exercises are designed to evaluate the national and local warning dissemination and response mechanisms when faced with a tsunami warning message. National emergency managers and Civil Protection Agencies (CPAs) at national and local levels, as well as tsunami warning centres and focal points, are encouraged to actively participate.

During the exercise, participants will respond to one or various scenarios put forth by the region’s Tsunami Service Providers (TSPs) across three phases:

  1. Alert. TSPs “detect” the tsunami-causing event and issue timely messages to participants.
  2. Early action. Tsunami Warning Focal Points relay the messate to national CPAs so they can simulate their respective responses.
  3. Requesting international assistance. Depending on the scenario, CPAs may request assistance from relevant international-level participants like the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) of the European Commission.

Benefits

  • Evaluating CPAs’ ability to respond to local or regional tsunami emergencies;
  • Strengthening their relationship to international aid agencies like the ERCC;
  • Exercising parts of or an entire end-to-end warning and evacuation scenario;
  • Testing communication policies, reviewing Standard Operating Procedures, and promoting emergency preparedness;
  • Contributing to the Preparedness indicator of the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme;
  • Maintaining operational readiness, staff familiarity and overall efficiency;
  • Increasing tsunami preparedness and awareness among coastal communities.
